Throwback: Moments from Mighty Reals gone by

ItsQwere’s Mighty Real events reflect the energy of what’s current within our community. Still mostly quarantined inside this year, reading groups took on new popularity, and we started a book club. Keeping with the book theme, this year’s Mighty Real features award-winning authors and poets reading their works.

Mighty Real: Black Voices In Conversation is nearly one week away, and we’d be remiss to not rundown the moments that paved the way to our 2021 virtual event.

Our annual event started in November 2018 with the idea of hosting an intimate concert of queer BIPOC performers, a lighter-weight occasion than the pop-up conversation salons we’d been hosting. Dubbed Mighty Real: a live musiq event, the series was born at The Peppermint Club in West Hollywood, featuring singer-model-advocate Laith Ashley, LA-based songwriter and queer ally Karlina, and queer pop-synth duo TWINKIDS.

The following year, we took the festivities from Southern to Northern California.

Under the bullshit of America’s 45th president, our 2019 event begged to be a laugh. The Bay Area’s queerest funny-folk took the stage of San Francisco’s Piano Fight for Mighty Real: a comedy night. Benefitting Compton’s Transgender Cultural District, proceeds raised nearly $1000 and a fundraising bar was set for us.

Mighty Real: Black Voices In Conversation is virtual on Sunday, November 7 at 12 p.m. PST., benefitting Oakland LGBTQ Center and our majestic lineup of queer poets and authors. Grab a ticket, and tell a friend to do the same.
