“The only lasting truth is change”… and the truth is, I had another book planned for April. But after the enthusiasm around March’s selection, Parable of the Sower, and the cliffhanger Octavia left us on, it only makes sense to continue the saga.
Join us in reading Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler. Our virtual discussion is Tuesday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. PST/ 9:30 EST.
The sequel continues the story of Lauren Olamina in socially and economically depressed California in the 2030s. Convinced that her community should colonize the stars, Lauren and her followers make preparations. But the collapse of society and rise of fanatics result in Lauren's followers being enslaved, and her daughter stolen from her. Now, Lauren must fight back to save the new world order.
Butler began to write a third Parable novel, tentatively titled Parable of the Trickster, which would have focused on an Earthseed community's struggle to survive on a new planet. She began this novel after finishing Parable of the Talents and mentioned her work on it in several interviews, but at some point, she encountered writer's block that led to numerous false starts. Butler died in 2006, leaving the series unfinished.
It’s said that you don't need to read the first book to understand or enjoy the second, though after reading Parable of the Talents, you might find yourself making another trip to the bookstore to pick up the prequel.
